The new book "Citizen Moore: The Life and Times of an American Iconoclast" by investigative journalist Roger Rapoport is an in-depth, richly nuanced look at the career of the multifaceted author/filmmaker Michael Moore. Like all attempts at great biography, it strives to recount an individual life and, by extension, serve as a template for how each of us, through trial and error, make our way in the world.

Thanks to Bill Sommerville, Laney can now chalk up a huge first to its long range of accomplishments. We are now the first community college in the entire U.S. to offer a class in Philanthropy. Not only are we breaking ground here in academic turf, but through his Philanthropic Ventures Foundation, Sommerville is also offering a $10,000 grant to the students in the class, to be awarded for a project benefiting the Laney campus.

From Geneva, Switzerland, comes Nathalie Pahud-Briquet, an English teacher at Laney since August 2005. It is a composed, smiling young woman who receives me in her little office in the Laney administration building. Busy but thoughtful, she agrees to share her experiences in the Bay Area.

It's pretty good for the most part. The heater in the swimming pool should definitely be fixed though. The doors could be cleaner as well.

There should be more greenery and an ATM machine. All of the chalk dust in the classrooms should be cleaned to bring it back to how it was back in the days.
