Peralta parking lots to undergo facelift

While students at Peralta Community Colleges are taking a break between spring and summer classes, the parking lots will be taking a beating. Scheduled from Tuesday, May 29 to Saturday, June 16, the parking lots at Merritt College, College of Alameda and Laney College will be repaved.

Winners were announced for the Laney College Annual Design Competition on Wednesday, May 16, in the G building courtyard. Design students were asked to create model proposals for this year's design theme, the new Laney Student Center. Held every semester, the competition is part of an effort to encourage student participation in campus and facility upgrades at Laney.

If you were going to gamble on anything (and odds are that you will at some point--pun intended) then it would be nice to know how the points, ticket numbers, and cards, etc. are stacked against you. Dr. Michael Orkin, dean of business, math and science at Laney College, gave a sobering and number-laden lecture on "Games of Chance and Sports Betting" at the Math Department's final seminar of the semester on May 8.

After the death of 33 students in the Virginia Tech massacre, a lot of students, teachers and staff in the country questioned if they were safe and if that kind of tragedy can be avoided in our own community. To talk about these kinds of doubts and how to deal with all the many different mental health issues, which can follow with a violent outburst, was what brought Dean Chambers, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker from the Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services, who spoke for a small but interested audience on Thursday, May 10 in the Student Center.
