The California State Senate Higher Education committee unanimously approved assembly Bill 1980, the Peralta Transportation Accessibility Act 9-0 June 11. "The bill will empower the Peralta CCD to ask students if they would like to pay a fee to subsidize bus passes," said Assembly Member Sandre Swanson, a former Laney student body president and author of the bill.

Tiana Wilkes is the new BCC President after receiving 204 votes. Her opponent, Alex Sobieski, received 103. According to the elections committee, there were numerous write-ins, but none over 25. Yineng "JK" Gi was elected Vice-President of Programs with 165 votes to Suzette Bennett's 128.

Passage of AB 1980 to be celebrated

Students of the Peralta Colleges will be joined by Assembly Member Sandre Swanson (D-Oakland) as well as Peralta and AC Transit officials to celebrate the passage of AB 1980, the Peralta Transportation Accessibility Act July 24 at Laney College. The bill was signed into law by governor Schwarzenegger last week.
