Former Black Panther Party Chair Elaine Brown spoke at Merritt College March 12.

While women were the backbone of the Party and often were responsible for the operations of local chapters of the organization, Brown was the only woman to lead the national Central Committee of the Party.

"We had a standing room only event with students anxious to meet her," said Dr. Siri Brown, chair of Merritt's Africana Studies Department. "Students were grateful for all her work in the past and present and for her speaking the truth about racism and its effect on our community and our need to continue fighting."

Brown was recently a candidate for U.S. President with the Green Party but resigned because the Party's leadership was seized by "neo-liberal men."

"The present Green Party leadership promotes a kinder, gentler capitalism, moderated racism, and environmentally-sustainable globalism, which I cannot support," said Brown in her open statement to the Green Party.

Brown was introduced by Barbara Becnel, co-author of a number of books with Tookie Williams. Williams was murdered by the Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger State of California in December 2005.
