20 year-old Andrew Thomas Hoeft-Edenfield is accused of stabbing 21-year old UC Berkeley student Christopher Wootton on the 2400 block of Warring and Channing Ave in Berkeley, in an area known as Fraternity Row.
"Witnesses said that the suspect and victim were part of a larger group that was involved in a verbal exchange that quickely escalated into a physical fight," During the fight, the suspect stabed Wootton, then fled," according to a police statement. "He tossed a bloody knife that was later discovered by officers.
"We are saddened by this tragic occurence," said BCC Public Information Officer Shirely Fogarino in a prepared statement. "Because of the nature of the case, privacy laws that apply to community college students, we cannot give information pertaining to the case."
Hoeft-Edenfield worked at Jamba Juice and is currently being held in Santa Rita County Jail awaiting trial. This weekend, he was treated for a headache at Alta Bates in Berkeley before being transported back to jail.
