The first time I met Felix, I was getting "dinner" from the salad bar at the cafeteria and I saw a whole lot of movement around the lounge.
One table in particular grabbed my attention because there was this little man sitting behind it, wagging a poster at me. I was like "what the heck?"
It was Felix Solomon telling me to pay attention to the Laney Tower table, for he was promoting the journalism department for the department fair.
I picked up an issue of the paper and he explained to me the different classes the department had.
I was interested in newspaper production for a long time, but dreaded signing up for it because I know that I don't have the best writing skills, skills that Burt (the advisor) has pointed out to me as being awful.
I know I'm awful, I know I haven't really sat down to read the stylebook in depth, but who really does? If anyone does, please write to me. I want to know how these committed individuals who care about Burt's ways to get the point out there. The fact is I get the point out there--so there!
When I arrived to the newsroom, Felix was one of the few people who helped me to see how it all worked around here. His endless stories about crashing parties have kept me entertained for a long time.
The first time I saw Felix outside of the newsroom, OMG! Felix was sitting in a little chair for my first and only "semester wrap party" for the student journalism staff. His piercing blue eyes shocked my dear friend Karissa when he opened them all of the sudden. Jeez, I will never forget that.
I can't imagine how many times he's made me laugh, whether it's the origins of his boots, lol, or simply seeing his face turn red whenever I mention random sex stories in the newsroom.
I think I'll miss him, helping me when I can't find a story in the network, or how to go about getting into a private event as press, and hearing his stories in general.
I can't think of him feeling the same, I mean how many times in a day has he heard "Feliiiiix, I can't…"
I hope the new reporters that come to the newsroom next semester find as much entertainment in him, because he definitely makes the newsroom more tolerable and fun.
