The 2009 Spring Sports Awards Banquet was held on May 6 at an Alameda restaurant that had a Laney College connection.

The banquet, which honored the Laney College athletes who participated in the spring sports--baseball, basketball, track and swimming/diving--was held at the Otaez Restaurant that is owned by former Laney football player Rolando Campos.

The food didn't disappoint--and neither did the festivities. Besides the Laney coaches, players, parents and support staff, the guests included Peralta Community College District Chancellor Elihu Harris, Laney College President Dr. Frank Chong, and Vice President of Student Services Donald Moore.

The food, for those of you scoring at home, included salad, Mexican rice, chicken enchiladas and beef tacos.

A good dinner was digested by all.

BASEBALL

The team was ravaged by injuries and suffered from inexperience (14 freshmen) and that resulted in an 11-28 overall record and 8-19 in the Bay Valley Conference.

Two players stood out. Sophomore pitcher Victor Guerrero was voted to the All-BVC first team for the second straight year. He finished with a 4-7 record and a 3.23 earned run average.

Patrick Collins Bride, the Eagles MVP, finished the season with a .288 average and was second on the team in RBI with 21.

Among the emerging freshman was Pedro Sanchez, who came on in the latter part of the season and hit a team-high .354 with 11 RBI while mostly hitting in the ninth spot.

Stephen Rivera hit .304 and led the team with 18 stolen bases. He was injured and missed the last couple of weeks of the season.

Despite all the losses, the team was competitive in most of its games.

"This team never quit," head baseball coach Francisco Zapata said. "They didn't get down on themselves and battled through the season."

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

For a first-time experience since the early 1970s, the team exceeded expectations and was a spoiler in the Bay Valley Conference, finishing with an 8-19 overall and 7-9 in the BVC.
