The Laney College women's track team has won the Coast Conference championship and the Northern California championship in the last couple of weeks, exceeding in each meet coach Curtis Taylor's predictions of how many points the team would score.

Now come the big test -the California Community College Athletic Association Track and Field Championships. These are going to be held at College of San Mateo on May 15-16.

The Eagles are not the favorite, but are a solid contender. Then again, this team has surprised people, including its own coach (to some extent).

"I thought we'd score 200 points in the Coast and we ended up with 250," Taylor said. "At NorCal I figured about 120 and we won with 142. Anything can happen."

Freshman Lauryn Newson will lead the Laney contingent. Newson is the community college national leader in the long jump at 20 feet, 33/4 inches and is favored in the event. She will also participate in the high jump, and the 100 and 200 meters.

Cerritos College, which won the title last year on its home track in Norwalk, is the prohibitive favorite. Laney finished third behind American River.

A big chunk of the Eagles point total will be missing from the meet. Laney's state-leading 4x100-meter relay team was disqualified in the Coast Conference trials and will not run at state.

The long jump (Newson, Michelle Miller) will be led on May 15 at 1 p.m.; the high jump (Newson, Lauren Jackson) will be at 4 p.m. on May 15. The javelin (Paris Dixon-Buckley) will be at 4 p.m. on May 15.

On May 16, the triple jump (Dominique Knowles) will be at 11 a.m.; the 100-meter hurdles (Jackson, Aria Betts) is at 2:40 p.m.; 400 meters (Dominique Crosby, Champelle Brown), 3 p.m.; 100 meters (Newson, Shanae Roach, Sepanta Padrah), 3:15 p.m.; 800 meters (Jalicia Cox), 3:30; 200 meters (Padrah, Brown, Newson), 4:05; and 4x400-meter relay, 5:15.
